McBride, Olsen score in 3-2 loss at NEC

Box Score The Hobart College hockey team got second period goals 47 seconds apart from Brad McBride and Mac Olson, but host New England College scored once in each period to defeat the Statesmen 3-2 this afternoon.

NEC (7-3-0) struck first, scoring just 1:59 into the game as Jesse Ostring notched his team-high sixth goal of the season, scoring on a rebounded shot by Kevin Marceau. The Pilgrims held a 9-7 edge in shots after 20 minutes.

The second period began with a flurry of scoring. This time it was Hobart's turn to score 1:59 into the period as McBride fired in a shot over the right shoulder of Pilgrim keeper Sebastian Andersson. Michael Russo and Bo Webster earned assists on the goal. The Pilgrims got the goal back just 23 second later as Shawn Watson netted his first collegiate goal rebounding in his own shot. Just 24 seconds passed before Hobart scored again. Olson put in a pass from Tommy Fiorentino at the 2:46 mark. NEC against outshot the Statesmen 15-11, but the team's played the final 17:14 without another goal.

The Pilgrims netted the game winner midway through the third period as Cheyne Matheson picked up a loose puck and put it home at the 9:58 mark. The Statesmen (2-4-4) had several scoring opportunities late, pulling goalie Tim Keegan for the final 1:13, but the NEC defense did not yield the equalizer.

Both teams finished the game with 32 shots on net. Hobart was 0-for-5 on the power-play and NEC closed the game 0-for-4 with the extra man.

Andersson earned the win with 30 saves, while Keegan recorded 29 saves on the afternoon.

The game was Hobart's final contest of the calendar year. The Statesmen will be back in action Jan. 3-4, 2014, when they compete in the Plattsburgh State Cardinal Classic.
