Olson scores game-winner 1:15 into overtime, #5 Hobart defeats #3/8 Utica 4-3

Box Score Hobart College first-year Mac Olson scored the game-winning goal 1:15 into overtime to give the No. 5 Statesmen hockey team to a 4-3 win over No. 3/8 Utica in an ECAC West game played tonight at the Pioneers' Memorial Auditorium.

Hobart improves to 17-2-2 and 9-1-1 in ECAC West play. The Pioneers fall to 16-4-0 overall and 7-3-0 in the conference. The Statesmen remain in first place in the league standings, and Utica is five points behind in second. Hobart and Utica will face off again on Sunday, Feb. 3 at 3 p.m. at the Aud.

Four different Statesmen scored in the victory. Senior Harry Radovich recorded two assists, and sophomore Bronson Kovacs produced a goal and an assist. Senior goalie Nick Broadwater finished with 24 saves in 60:43. He improved to 13-2-2 in goal this season.

Going into the third period the game was tied 1-1.  Rob Morton put Utica on top 2-1 with 6:50 left in the period. Joel Wetmore and Jon Gaffney set up the play.  With 2:41 left in regulation, senior Bobby Hannah tallied his seventh goal of the year to knot the game at two.  He sent in a rebound from a shot by senior Brad Richard. Sophomore Ryan Michel also earned an assist.

Utica was called for a penalty with 1:23 on the clock, however, with exactly one minute left, Peter LaFosse scored a short-handed goal after a pass from Ridge Garbutt to give the Pioneers a 3-2 lead. Hobart pulled Broadwater for the extra skater for a 6-on-4 advantage, and with 8.1 remaining, sophomore Tommaso Traversa sent the game into overtime with a power-play goal tying it up at 3-3. Radovich and first-year Ben Gamache earned the assists. It was Traversa's seventh goal this season. Olson secured the victory for the Statesmen with his eighth goal this year just 1:15 into overtime. Kovacs and senior Frank Salituro set up the game-winning tally.

Kovacs scored the first goal of the game to give Hobart a 1-0 lead 9:58 into the game. He took advantage of a power play, ripping a shot from the point, to notch his sixth goal of the season off assists from sophomore Terrence O'Neill and Radovich. Just 53 seconds into the second period, Utica's Louie Educate scored on a Pioneer power play to tie things up 1-1. Donny Olivieri and Trever Hertz earned the assists.

Nick Therrien played all 61:15 in goal for Utica and stopped 34 shots. The Statesmen held a 38-27 advantage in shots. Hobart was 2-for-6 on the power play, and the Pioneers were 1-for-3.
