Herons to face Brewers in Liberty League semifinal

The William Smith College basketball team will travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to take on Vassar College in the semifinals of the Liberty League Championship Tournament. Tipoff in the Brewers' Athletics & Fitness Center is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20.
 
William Smith completed the regular season with a 16-9 overall record and finished tied for third in the league standings with a 10-6 record. The Herons enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed. William Smith was fourth in the league in scoring offense (61.4 ppg) and sixth in scoring defense (61.7 ppg).
 
Sophomore forward Chloe Hayter leads the Herons in scoring (14.8 ppg) and is second in rebounding (7.8 rpg). Senior Sydni Salvatore adds 10.3 ppg and 1.9 steals per game. Junior Sasha Borenstein has made a league-high 64 3-pointers this season and averages 9.8 ppg. Junior Erin O'Brien chips in 9.3 ppg, a team-high 3.7 apg, and a team-high 2.0 spg. She is ranked 22nd in the nation in assist-to-turnover (1.89). Junior Jacqueline Murphy, a 5-foot-4 guard, is the team's top rebounder, pulling down 8.3 boards per contest (3rd in the league).
 
Vassar (21-4, 13-3) is the two-time defending Liberty League champion. The Brewers won the regular season league title with a 13-3 record. They average a league-high 69.8 ppg and allow 58.4 ppg (4th).
 
Junior Cydni Matsuoka is Vassar's leader. She is first in the conference in field goal percentage (.542), assists (5.6 apg), free throw percentage (.891), and 3-point field goal percentage (.447) and second in scoring (17.4 ppg). She is fourth in the nation in 3-point percentage and assist-to-turnover (2.37), 12th in assists, and 15th in field goal percentage. Sophomore Colleen O'Connell contributes 11.0 ppg and a team-high 8.1 rpg. Junior Hannah Senftleber and sophomore Nyah Berg produce 9.7 ppg and 9.3 ppg, respectively.
 
This will be the 31st meeting between the conference rivals with William Smith owning a 27-3 series lead. However, the Brewers have won the past two games in Poughkeepsie (80-70 on Feb. 8, 2013, & 70-55 on Feb. 18, 2012).
