Statesmen fall to Neumann in ECAC West tournament semifinal

Box Score The No. 5/6 Hobart College hockey team fell 2-0 to No. 13 Neumann in an ECAC West tournament semifinal played at The Cooler tonight. The No. 2 seed Statesmen fall to 19-5-2 this season, while the third-seeded Knights improve to 18-6-3 and earned a spot in the tournament championship game.

Only two teams in the history of Hobart hockey have more wins in a season than the current Statesmen. Neumann will face No. 4 seed Manhattanville who upset top-seeded Utica 2-1 in overtime in the other ECAC West semifinal played at the Pioneers' Memorial Auditorium tonight. The championship will be played in Aston, Pa., on Saturday, March 2.

Hobart must now wait to see if they receive a bid into the NCAA tournament. The tournament bracket will be release on NCAA.com on Sunday, March 3.

The Knights scored both of their goals in the second period. Scott Farrell struck first at 7:06 on a power play. Steve Gervais broke away for a one-on-one with Hobart goalie, senior Nick Broadwater. Broadwater stopped Gervais' shot, but he was not able to collect the rebound. It bounced to Farrell who sent his shot into the back of the net. At 14:56, Matt Mazarolo blasted a shot from the blue line that was deflected into the goal by Craig Cowie. Chris Bournazos also earned an assist on the play.

Hobart held a 43-22 advantage in shots, including a 12-4 edge in the final period. With just over 9:30 left in the second, sophomore Tommaso Traversa lifted a shot that was just barely blocked by the skate of a Neumann defender. Hobart pulled Broadwater for the final 1:26, and the Knights were called for boarding with 1:18 remaining, but the Statesmen were unable to capitalize.

Braely Torris played all 60 minutes in goal for the Knights and stopped all 43 shots that he faced. Broadwater played 58:34 and made 20 saves. The Statesmen were 0-for-4 on the power play, while Neumann finished 1-for-4.
