#3/8 Pioneers score late in 3rd, hang on to edge #5 Statesmen 1-0

Box Score The No. 3/8 Utica College hockey team scored the lone goal of the game with 4:50 left in the third period and hung on to edge No. 5 Hobart College 1-0 in an ECAC West game played this afternoon at the Pioneers' Memorial Auditorium.

The Statesmen fall to 17-3-2 overall and 9-2-1 in the ECAC West. The Pioneers are now 17-4-0 overall and 8-3-0 in conference play. Utica is now three points behind the Statesmen who remain in first place in the league standings.

The first two periods proved to be scoreless. Utica held a 13-8 edge in shots in the first, and shots were even at 14 in the second. The Pioneers broke through at 15:10 into the third. Louie Educate scored what proved to be the game-winner after passes from Jon Gaffney and Ridge Garbutt. The Statesmen pulled senior goalie Nick Broadwater for the final 1:05, but were unable to capitalize with the extra attacker.

Broadwater played 58:55 in goal and finished with 39 saves. Nick Therrien played all 60 minutes in goal for Utica and stopped 35 shots.

The Pioneers held a 40-35 edge in shots. The Statesmen were 0-for-4 on the power play, and Utica finished 0-for-6.

The Statesmen are back in action on Feb. 8 when they travel to take on Manhattanville in another ECAC West game at 5:30 p.m.
