The first of three NCAA Division III men's basketball regional rankings were released late yesterday by the NCAA. The Hobart College basketball team is fifth in the East region.

The Statesmen are 14-6 overall and lead the Liberty League with a 10-1 record. Hobart is riding a six-game winning streak, including Tuesday's 85-82 double overtime victory against second place Union College (17-4, 9-3). The Statesmen are scheduled to play their next three games on the road, visiting Vassar College (7-14, 3-9) on Friday, Feb. 8.

Senior guard Stefan Thompson and junior forward Richie Bonney give Hobart a potent one-two punch. Thompson leads the league in assists (5.5 apg) and assist-to-turnover (2.4) and ranks second in 3-point percentage (.453), third in free throw percentage (.845), fourth in scoring (16.1 ppg), and sixth in 3-pointers made per game (2.0). Bonney paces the conference in field goal percentage (.625) and is second in scoring (20.1 ppg), third in rebounding (8.0 rpg), sixth in blocked shots (0.9 bpg), and ninth in steals (1.4 spg).

The University of Rochester (19-1) is first, followed by SUNY Cortland (17-3), Stevens Institute of Technology (17-3), and New York University (13-7). SUNY Geneseo (14-7) is sixth, right behind the Statesmen.

Hobart climbed as high as third in the regional rankings last season before earning an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament.
