Box Score The No. 13 William Smith College soccer team dropped its first match of the season to No. 24 The College of New Jersey 2-1 this afternoon in its opening round match of the 2013 TCNJ Classic. It was also the first game of the season for the Lions.
It wasn't until just before halftime that TCNJ broke the scoreless tie. With 2:53 left in the first half, Leigh Applestein bodied a direct kick into the goal. Jordan Downs was credited with the assist.
With 23:05 remaining, TCNJ was called for a foul inside the penalty area and junior
MaryClaire Pelletier capitalized drilling a penalty kick into the goal to even the score at 1-1. The Herons came within inches of taking the lead just under five minutes later, but first-year Maddie Devereaux's shot from the near side hit the post.
With just 12:17 left in regulation, Katie Lindacher scored what proved to be the game-winner for the Lions. She fought off a Heron defender and slipped past the diving keeper before touching the ball into the net.
TCNJ held an 18-11 advantage in shots and a 7-0 lead in corners. Senior
Chelsea Dunay played all 90 minutes in goal for the Herons and finished with seven saves. Kendra Griffith made four saves in 90 minutes for the Lions.
The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, Aug. 31, when they take on Stevens Institute of Technology in their final game of the TCNJ Classic at 2 p.m. The Lions will play Rensselaer tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.
