Yellowjackets slide by Statesmen 3-2

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The University of Rochester men's soccer team scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 76th minute to defeat Hobart College 3-2 in a non-league match played this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Yellowjackets improve to 4-1-0, while the Statesmen fall to 2-3-0.

Three different players scored for Rochester. Mike Moranz played all 90 minutes in goal for the Yellowjackets and made six saves. Junior Bernard Abagali led the Statesmen with two assists. Junior Ryan Farrell and first-year Sean Barry each scored their first collegiate goals for Hobart. Junior Mike Lucas played all 90 minutes in goal and made six stops.

The Yellowjackets scored the first goal of the game in the 34th minute. Jeff Greblick fed Tyler Buck who placed a shot into the left corner of the goal to make it 1-0. Just 4:28 later, the Statesmen tied things up. Abagali sent the ball right across the mouth of the goal. Farrell was at the right post to redirect it into the back of the net.

In the 57th minute, Abagali lofted a pass into the box and Barry's header goal gave the Statesmen a 2-1 lead. However 2:02 later, Shane Dobles connected with a header goal for Rochester after an assist from Alex Swanger to knot the match at two. With 14:47 on the clock, Buck almost put Rochester on top, as he broke through the defense and took a hard shot from right in front of the goal, but his effort was rejected with an impressive save by Lucas. However with 14:15 left in the match, Sean Daly scored what proved to be the game-winner on a header after a Yellowjacket corner kick sent into the box by Ben Keeton.

Hobart came close to tying the match up again in the final minutes. With 7:44 remaining, after a Statesmen corner, first-year Charlie Kelly put a header on goal that was saved by a header from a Yellowjacket defender. With 1:44 left in regulation, Kelly sent a free kick into the box and junior Oddmund Nesbakk put another header on goal, but Moranz came up with the diving save. In addition, Hobart earned a corner kick with 41 seconds remaining, but the Statesmen were unable to capitalize.

Rochester held an 18-13 edge in total shots and a 7-4 lead in corners.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Sept. 18 when they travel to take on Utica in another non-league match at 7 p.m.
