Charlie Kelly sent home the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute to lead the Statesmen soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Utica in a non-league match played in Utica, N.Y., tonight. The Statesmen improve to 3-3-0 overall, while the Pioneers fall to 2-4-0.
After a scoreless first period, sophomore
Jacob Fox put Hobart up 1-0 in the 63rd minute. Kelly put a free kick on goal that was saved by the Utica goalie, but Fox was there to send the rebound from Kelly's shot into the back of the net. It was his second goal this season.
In the 79th minute, the Pioneers answered when Kevin McAllister collected the ball and scored after a free kick sent into the box by Jeffrey Cupka. Just 2:15 later, the Statesmen took back the lead on a
Charlie Kelly's first goal of the night. Sophomore
Marco Ronning lofted a corner kick into the box to find Kelly at the far post. Kelly placed a header into the top left corner of the goal.
Exactly four minutes later, Utica knotted the match at two. Dennis Runikera capitalized on a low cross from Shane Ruffing, sending the game into overtime.
Neither team was able to net the game-winner in the first 10-minute overtime period. Just 1:09 into the second overtime, Kelly collected a long ball sent into the box and fired into the upper left side of the net to clinch the win for Hobart. Kelly leads the Statesmen with three goals and seven points this year.
The Pioneers held a 17-15 edge in total shots and a 6-2 lead in corners. Sophomore goalie
Tyler Serafine played all 101:09 in goal for the Statesmen and finished with seven saves. Anthony Caruso played the entire match for Utica and recorded six saves.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 21, when they host Geneseo for another non-league match at 2 p.m.
