Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 21 St. Lawrence men's soccer team scored two goals late in the second half to defeat Hobart 2-0 in the Liberty League opener for both teams played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Saints improve to 5-1-0 overall, while the Statesmen are now 4-4-0 this season.
The first period was evenly played and the score remained 0-0 at halftime. Hobart had one of its best scoring chances in the 66th minute. First-year
Clint Dunn received a cross on the right side of the net. He blasted a hard shot that the diving St. Lawrence keeper was just barely able to get a hand on to preserve the 0-0 tie. Just under five minutes later, sophomore
Zico Gaeffke broke by his defender for a one-on-one with the goalie, but he appeared to rush his shot and fired it right into goalie, Aaron Costello's chest.
It wasn't until the 75th minute, that St. Lawrence broke through. Cristian Barral Arteta fired a shot on goal that was saved by Hobart keeper junior
Mike Lucas. The rebound bounced out to Andrew Bernardsky, who was able to put his quick shot into the back of the net.
In the 85th minute, the Saints added to their lead. Morgan Smith broke through the Hobart back line and chipped in an unassisted goal. He leads St. Lawrence with three goals this season.
The Saints held a 12-8 edge in total shots and a 4-1 advantage in corners. Costello finished with four saves in all 90 minutes in goal for St. Lawrence. Lucas stopped three shots in all 90 minutes for Hobart.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 1, when they travel to take on Ithaca in a non-league match at 4 p.m.
