Melanie O'Connor scored just 38 seconds into overtime to lift No. 5 William Smith College to a 2-1 victory over Vassar College in a Liberty League field hockey match at McCooey Field today. The Herons remain unbeaten, improving to 9-0 overall (2-0 in the league).
William Smith got off to a quick start, opening the scoring in the 11th minute. O'Connor fired a shot in from the right slot that Cappello redirected into the right side of the cage. It was Cappello's team-leading eighth goal of the year. That goal stood alone for over 57 minutes, despite a relentless attack by the Heron offense.
William Smith enjoyed an 18-3 shot advantage and a 5-2 edge in penalty corners at the end of regulation. Vassar (4-3, 0-2) weathered the storm thanks to its defense and senior goalie Maggie Brelis (9 saves). The Brewers forced extra time with just 2:47 remaining in the second half. First-year Hayley Beach sent a cross cage pass to junior Dara Davis on the right side of the cage, who sticked home her fourth goal of the year.
Vassar started overtime with the ball, but William Smith immediately pressured and took it away. O'Connor carried the ball into the circle and ripped a shot from the middle that deflected off a defender's stick into the right corner of the cage. It was her sixth tally of the season.
Heron first-year goalie
Biz Chirco earned the win with one save.
William Smith is off to its best start since opening the 1995 season with 16 consecutive victories. The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 5, when they host Union at 2 p.m. The Brewers, who have dropped back-to-back overtime games, will travel to Hartwick on Friday, Oct. 4.
