Box Score William Smith College junior
Madeline Buckley's second goal of the game with under two minutes left in regulation proved to be the game-winner, as the No. 6 Herons edged No. 22 St. Lawrence in a Liberty League contest at Sandy MacAllaster Field this afternoon.
William Smith, who improves to 7-1-0 on the season with their seventh straight win, got both the equalizer and the game-winner from Buckley in the last 15 minutes of regulation. The Herons came back from a 2-1 deficit to start off Liberty League play with a victory. The Saints fall to 6-1-2 on the season. St. Lawrence will travel to RPI and Union next weekend for Liberty League matches, while William Smith will travel to Vassar and Bard.Â
William Smith struck first in the 15th minute as junior
Krista Longo scored her fourth goal of the season. A ball cleared up field by the Heron defense took a few high bounces, and first-year
Kara Shue beat the St. Lawrence back line for a breakaway down the left side of the field. As the Saints' defense collapsed back on Shue, she dished a centering pass to a wide open Longo in front of the net, who tapped the ball past goalkeeper Kelsey West for the 1-0 lead.Â
St. Lawrence would tie the game in the 30th minute on Julia Friesen's fourth goal of the season. Lindsay Geier started a quick transition up the field into the Herons' defensive zone and then pushed the ball ahead to Friesen. Friesen split two William Smith defenders into the left side of the 18 yard box and then hit a hard shot out of the reach of Heron senior goalkeeper
Chelsea Dunay and into the far corner of the net, tying the game at 1-1.Â
William Smith came out of the halftime composed and controlled the majority of the possession in the first 13 minutes of the second stanza. It was St. Lawrence, though, that would capitalize on the next opportunity to take its first lead of the game. Friesen started the play with a long pass sent across the field down the right side for Mackenzie Collins, who hit a beautiful cross to the far post. Samantha Rock was there to one-time the pass into the net to give the Saints a 2-1 advantage. Â
The Herons finally broke through to tie the game when Buckley notched her fourth goal of the season in the 76th minute. She started a give-and-go play to junior
MaryClaire Pelletier into the 18 yard box and then drilled a hard shot to the opposite corner. The ball hit the post then deflected into the goal to bring the game to 2-2. Â
Buckley would capitalize again to score the game-winner for William Smith in the 88th minute as she chipped a high shot from the 18 yard box over West's head and into the goal.
Dunay finished with two saves on the day for William Smith, while West made five in the contest. The Herons held advantages in both shots (13-6) and corners (6-3) in extending their win-streak to seven games.  Â
