William Smith outlasts Engineers 2-1

TROY, N.Y. - The William Smith College field hockey team picked up its ninth win of the season as they topped Rensselaer 2-1 this afternoon. The Herons got a goal in each half as they held on to beat the Engineers.

First-year Hannah Wood picked up her team leading 15th goal of the season in the 22nd minute. Junior Erin Miller carried the ball into the circle and sent a pass to Wood who hit a one-timer into the back of the net to put William Smith (9-4, 3-2) up 1-0.

The Herons doubled their lead in the 38th minute when junior Madison Finn collected her third goal of the year. Finn was awarded a penalty stroke and made the most of her opportunity firing a shot past the Rensselaer goalie. William Smith is now 2-2 on penalty strokes this year.

Four minutes after the Finn goal, Kate Batzinger collected a Chloe Hutchinson rebound and buried the shot to make it 2-1. The Engineers (4-7, 2-4) continued to apply pressure following the Batzinger goal outshooting William Smith 15-12 in the second half.

Senior goalie Catherine Hare started for the Herons making 10 saves. Hannah Clough played all 70 minutes for Rensselaer stopping 12 shots on the afternoon.

Both teams recorded 20 shots with William Smith out gaining the Engineers 10-3 in penalty corners.

The Herons return to action Friday, Oct. 17 when they take on Rochester (12-2, 4-1) at McCooey Field. The contest is the Liberty League finale for both teams.
