Statesmen and Thoroughbreds play to 0-0 double overtime tie

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie with Skidmore in a Liberty League match played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Statesmen are now 8-4-2 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play, while the Thoroughbreds are 7-4-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the Liberty League.

Junior goalie Tyler Serafine played all 110 minutes for Hobart and finished with a career-high 12 saves. Eli Kisselbach played the entire match in goal for Skidmore and made four saves. The Thoroughbreds finished with a 23-21 advantage in shots in a game where both teams had solid scoring chances but were unable to capitalize.

Hobart first-year Nick Dosky had some of the Statesmen's best scoring chances in the second half. In the 73rd minute, Dosky collected a pass from classmate Joseph Escamilla and carried the ball deep into the box, before firing a shot on goal. Skidmore keeper, Kisselbach, got his hands on the ball, but couldn't hang on and it bounced behind him towards the goal, however Thoroughbred defender Tesfaye Paine was there to clear the ball before it could pass over the goal line. Just under three minutes later, Dosky broke through the Skidmore defense for a one-on-one with the keeper, but his shot went inches wide of the far left post.

Skidmore's best scoring chance in the second half came with just over 17 minutes remaining. Adam Beek drilled a shot on goal from right out in front, but Serafine was there to punch it away and keep things scoreless.

Both teams came close to finding the game-winning goal in overtime. With 3:30 remaining, junior Kyle Wiatrowski broke through the Skidmore back line and carried the ball into the box. Just before he could get a shot off, Kisselbach came running out of the goal and dove on top of the ball at the top of the best to deny the scoring chance. With 2:20 left, Brock Bakewell blasted a shot on goal for Skidmore after a pass from Nick Masiero, but his attempt was turned aside with another big save from Serafine.

The Thoroughbreds finished with a 6-5 edge in corners, earning three in overtime. With the tie, Hobart currently sits in fourth place in the league standings, one point ahead of Clarkson and RIT and two points behind second place Vassar.

The Statesmen will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 18, when they host Rensselaer for another Liberty League match on Cozzens Field at 2 p.m.
