William Smith edges Union 3-2

Box Score SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The William Smith field hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 first half lead and held on as they defeated Union 3-2 in Liberty League action this afternoon. The Herons used goals from three different goal scorers to pick up win number eight.
 
First-year Hannah Wood opened the scoring for William Smith (8-3, 2-1) in the 16th minute. She tucked a shot inside the right post after collecting a pass from sophomore Alessandra Patrizio. Eighty-two seconds later, Katie Meyer gave the Herons a 2-0 lead when she put the ball into the back of the net after a scramble in front of the goal.
 
Union's Laura Pacheco got the Dutchwomen (3-6, 0-3) on the board just past the 20 minute mark when she blasted a shot from the top of the circle.
 
First-year Maura Moran put home the eventual game winner in the 51st minute when she fired a low liner from the right side of the cage to make it 3-1. Hannah Najar picked up a goal off a penalty corner in 62nd minute to complete the scoring.
 
Senior Catherine Hare made seven stops on the afternoon including one on a penalty stroke in the 35th minute with William Smith holding a 2-1 lead at the time. Laura Aptowitz started in goal for Union making 6 saves.
 
The Herons outshot Union 30-14 and picked up 18 penalty corners to the Dutchwomen's five.
 
William Smith returns to action in the second game of a three-game road trip when they travel to Poughkeepsie, New York to take on Vassar in a Liberty League contest.
