#8 Herons close regular season with 3-1 victory over RIT

GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 8 William Smith College soccer team closed out the 2014 regular season with a 3-1 victory over RIT in a Liberty League game played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. Senior Madeline Buckley posted two assists in the win.
 
The Herons held a 3-0 lead until late in the second half, when the Tigers scored their lone goal. William Smith improves to 13-2-1 and finished with a perfect 8-0-0 mark in Liberty League play. The Tigers wrapped up the regular season with an 8-4-5 overall record and a 3-3-2 mark in the conference.
 
Sophomore Kara Shue scored first for the Herons. Buckley sent a pass from the right side of the box to Shue out in front, who placed her shot into the left side of the goal. It was Shue's fifth goal this season.
 
William Smith opened up its lead in the second half. Sophomore Brie Ruane notched her seventh goal of the season in the 64th minute. She stopped a Tiger clear attempt and scored from right out in front to make it 2-0. Senior Krista Longo extended the lead to 3-0 in the 70th minute. Buckley tapped a short pass to Longo on her left and Longo's low rolling shot found the back of the net for her seventh goal this season. Buckley is now tied for 11th on the William Smith career lists for goals (32) and points (80).
 
Paige Byers broke through for RIT in the 84th minute. Her shot from about 20 yards out came off a pass from Maxine Culhane and slipped passed Heron goalkeeper first-year Nicole McGlinchy.
 
McGlinchy played all 90 minutes in goal for William Smith and made three saves. Amanda Murray played the entire match in goal for RIT and stopped seven shots. The Herons finished with an 18-4 advantage in shots and a 4-0 lead in corners.
 
William Smith is the No. 1 seed in the Liberty League tournament, and will host a semifinal game on Wednesday, Nov. 5, on Cozzens Field at 1:30 p.m. The Herons will face the Tigers once again, as they secured the No. 4 seed this afternoon.
