GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 7 William Smith College soccer team was edged 2-1 in double overtime by No. 12 The College of New Jersey in an NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Herons finished their season with a 16-3-1 overall record.

The Lions are now 17-2-1 and advance to the NCAA tournament third round. They will face the winner of the Brandeis vs. Misericordia second round match.

The Herons got on the scoreboard first when senior
Brenna Kincaid found the back of the net on a penalty kick at 28:40 into the match. It was her first goal of the season. William Smith held the lead until the 84th minute, when Christine Levering's shot from the far left sideline sailed into the back of the goal at 83:35 to tie the game at 1-1.

First-year goalie
Hannah Fricke made her first collegiate start for the Herons. She played all 105 minutes and finished with eight saves. She stifled a few great scoring chances for the Lions. Early in the second half she jumped up to deny a shot by Elizabeth Thoresen from the right sideline. With just under 15 minutes left in regulation, Fricke ran out to reject a chance by Marissa Scognamiglio, diving on the ball at the top of the box before she could get her shot off.

The Herons came inches away from scoring a second goal just minutes before TCNJ broke through to tie the game. At 81:02, senior
Krista Longo banged a shot off the right post.

The Lions scored game-winning goal five minutes into the second overtime. TCNJ earned a corner at 104:50. Christine Levering took an initial shot that was saved, but Jessica Goldman stopped a Heron clear attempt and slid her shot through a crowd in front of the goal and across the goal line.

The Lions finished with a 19-13 advantage in shots and a 5-4 lead in corners. Kendra Griffith played all 105 minutes in goal for TCNJ and finished with five saves.

The Heron Class of 2015 finished their William Smith soccer careers with a 73-7-6 four-year record (.884), logging the highest winning percentage by a graduating class. Senior
Madeline Buckley finished her soccer career 10th on the William Smith list for career points with 83, tied for 10th in career goals with 33 and tied for 18th in career assists with 17. They earned four Liberty League titles and four trips to the NCAA tournament, including the 2013 national championship title.Â
