Game Recap: William Smith Ice Hockey | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

Three second period goals power Herons past Pilgrims

Henniker, N.H.- The William Smith College ice hockey team scored three second period power play goals to record a 3-1 non-conference win over New England College this afternoon. Krista Federow had a hand in all three goals for the Herons.

William Smith (2-6-1) opened the scoring 45 seconds into the second period. With the Herons on a 5 on 3 power play, Dori Craig fired a shot from just outside the left post that rebounded in front of the crease. Catherine Linehan collected the rebound and tucked it just over the goal line to give William Smith a 1-0 lead.  Craig and Federow were credited with assists on the goal. Thirty seconds later, with the Herons still on the power play, Sarah Garrett fired a shot from the point that Federow redirected into the back of the net for her team leading fourth goal of the season. Emily Burton also notched an assist on the play when she sent a cross ice pass to Garrett along the blue line.

Halfway through the second period, William Smith earned another 5 on 3 power play opportunity. Federow won a faceoff back to Garrett. Garrett sent a crossing pass to Burton who blasted a shot from the point.  Federow, who stationed herself in front of the goal to set a screen on the Pilgrim goalie, used great stick sense to redirect the shot into the open net.

Just under two minutes into the third period, New England College cut the deficit to 3-1. Amanda McGoldrick notched an unassisted power play goal on a rebound to get the Pilgrims on the scoreboard.  McGoldrick's initial shot was stopped by the Herons' goalie who was not able to cover up the loose puck.

New England College had their chances offensively. At 11:42 of the second period, William Smith killed off a 5 on 3 situation where New England fired seven shots on goal that Megan Messuri was able to turn aside.  In the third period, the Herons killed off 1:30 of 4 on 3 play in order to preserve the two goal lead.

Messuri, who was named to the ECAC West Honor Roll by the league office for the second straight week, started in goal for the Herons and stopped 46 of the 47 shots she faced including the first 32 shots in the game. Brooklyn Doak started between the pipes for the Pilgrims and made 20 saves.  After William Smith's third goal, Michaela Clark came on in relief and stopped all 11 shots she faced.

New England College outshot the Herons 47 to 34. William Smith went 3 of 8 on the man advantage while the Pilgrims managed just the one goal on their 10 power play opportunities.

William Smith returns to action on Dec. 6-7 when it travels to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to take on Chatham in an ECAC West weekend series.
