Nationally-ranked No. 11 St. Lawrence men's soccer team edged Hobart 1-0 in double overtime in a Liberty League Tournament semifinal played in Canton, New York, this afternoon. The top-seeded Saints didn't break through with the game-winner until the 106th minute.
Â
With the win, St. Lawrence earned the right to host the Liberty League championship game on Saturday, Nov. 8. The Saints will face either RPI or Vassar. The fourth-seeded Statesmen are now 12-5-3 overall, posting their ninth straight winning season and logging the most wins in a season since 2011. Hobart also made its first appearance in the Liberty League tournament since 2011. The Saints put an end to the Statesmen's eight match unbeaten streak.
Â
Sophomore midfielder Rob Brandell scored the game-winner for the Saints. Mark Provost hit a through ball that sprung Brandell between a pair of Statesmen defenders for a one-on-one with Hobart keeper junior
Tyler Serafine. Brandell settled and touched the ball around the charging goalkeeper to send St. Lawrence to its second Liberty League championship in as many seasons.
Â
Brandell had one of the Saints' best chances of the day in the opening seconds of the first overtime session with an open look from the corner of the six, but his attempt was denied by Serafine, who finished with eight saves in all 106 minutes. Â
Â
Sean Houston finished with two saves in goal for the Saints. St. Lawrence finished with a 24-4 edge in total shots and 10-3 edge in corners on the afternoon.
