Hannah Wood led the way for the Herons notching her first career hat trick in the process.
In the first half hour of the contest, William Smith (4-1) was not able to solve Golden Flyer goalie Shannon Winney who made 10 saves. In the 31st minute, junior
Madison Finn got the Herons on the board. Off of a penalty corner, she redirected a
Caitlin Moran attempt into the back of the net. The goal was Finn's second of the year.
Sophomore
Katie Meyer's goal in the 50th minute opened the floodgates for the William Smith offense. Meyer's second goal of the season was set up by classmate
Alessandra Patrizio.
Wood scored the game's next three goals. In the 57th minute, she collected a rebound and rifled it by the goalie for her sixth goal of the season. Two minutes later, Patrizio picked up her second assist of the game when she fed Wood to give the Herons a 4-0 lead. Wood completed the natural hat trick in the 64th minute. After putting the ball into play on a penalty corner, Finn fired a shot off the post and Wood was there to pick up the rebound and her eighth goal of the season.
Senior
Catherine Hare got the start in net for William Smith and posted her third consecutive shutout. She made two saves on the contest. Winney played 64 minutes in net for Nazareth and made 17 saves.
The Herons dominated the stat sheet outshooting the Golden Flyers 35-4. William Smith also won 15 penalty corners to Nazareth's one.
The Herons return to action Saturday, Sep. 20 when they host Manhattanville (2-5) in the first game of the 2014 William Smith Classic at 11 a.m. on McCooey Field. St. Lawrence (2-3) will face Lebanon Valley (5-0) in Saturday's second game.
