#15 William Smith pulls away from Manhattanville

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. – The 15th ranked William Smith field hockey team used two second half goals to defeat Manhattanville 4-1 this morning.  First-year Hannah Wood led all scorers with a team-high four points.
 
Sophomore Katie Meyer got the Herons on the board in the 16th minute when she batted an Alessandra Patrizio shot out of the air and into the back of the net. The goal was Meyer's third goal of the year.
 
Less than three minutes later, the Valiants evened things up when Bregje Smits blasted a shot past William Smith goalie Catherine Hare.  Smit's goal was set up on a penalty corner from the top of the circle.
 
Wood put the next two goals in for the Herons.  At the 23 minute mark, she redirected a pass from Patrizio into the back of the net.  It was Patrizio's second assist of the game and team leading fifth of the season. In the second half, Wood notched her second goal of the game and her tenth of the season off of a penalty corner. Junior Madsion Finn sent the ball to the top of the arch where Alexandra Frary stopped the ball to set up the Wood blast.
 
In the 66th minute, Frary scored her third goal of the season to give the Herons a 4-1 lead. Frary collected her own rebound and buried the shot in the back of the net.
 
Hare got the start in net for William Smith making five saves. Before Smits goal, Hare posted 227:42 minutes straight of shutout action in goal. Meghan Hughes got the start in goal for Manhattanville making 16 saves. 
 
The Herons outshot the Valiants 26-10 and owned an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners.
 
Both teams will return to action tomorrow for their second game in the William Smith Classic. Manhattanville will take on St. Lawrence at 11 a.m. while William Smith will take on Lebanon Valley at 2 p.m.
