Statesmen score late in 2nd half to top Cardinals 1-0

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team broke through, scoring the lone goal of the game in the 84th minute to secure a 1-0 win over visiting Plattsburgh in a non-conference match played this afternoon on Cozzens Field. With the victory in their home opener, the Statesmen improve to 2-1-0 this season, while the Cardinals fall to 2-2-0.

Junior Jacob Fox notched the game-winner for Hobart. It was his first goal of the season. Junior Zico Gaeffke took a feed from senior Bernard Abagali. Gaeffke carried the ball into the box and blasted a shot that was blocked by a Cardinal defender. He chased down the rebound and then sent a cross to Fox who was out in front and buried a shot into the back of the net.

Plattsburgh's best scoring chance came with just 9:34 left in the game. Nick Parrella broke by his defender, streaking into the box. Just as he got his shot off, Hobart senior goalie Mike Lucas dove on top of the ball. The ball momentarily bounced out of Lucas' hands, but with Parrella almost tracking it down, Lucas recovered and once again dove on top of the ball, keeping things scoreless.

Lucas played all 90 minutes in goal for the Statesmen and notched his first shutout of the year, stopping all nine shots he faced. Mitchell Jordan the entire match in net for the Cardinals and finished with three saves.

Hobart held a 9-5 edge in corners and a slight 14-13 upper hand in shots.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 9, when they travel to take on St. John Fisher in another non-league game beginning at 7 p.m.
