CANTON, N.Y.—For the second time this season, first-year
Luke Ruddy scored a career-high to help the Hobart College basketball team to victory over St. Lawrence University. Ruddy produced a game-high 14 points to help the Statesmen top the Saints 67-62.
Ruddy, who scored a then season-high 9 points in Hobart's 65-56 win over St. Lawrence earlier this month, was 5-of-6 from the floor with a 3-pointer and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Junior
Michael LaValle added 12 points, all from behind the 3-point arc. Sophomore
Thomas Campion scored 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting with three 3-pointers. Sophomore
Pete Drescher grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and senior
Trey Blanding added a game-high nine assists.
The Statesmen (11-6, 6-2) shot 49 percent from the floor, including a scalding 64 percent in the second half, and 44 percent from 3-point range, sinking 10-of-23 from deep.
For St. Lawrence (9-9, 4-6), Brady Condlin logged team-highs of 13 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Kaleb Faison also scored 13 points and Willie Zachery chipped in 10 points.
The Saints ran out to a 23-10 lead, but Hobart pushed back with a 16-8 surge. After shooting just 4-of-17 in the first 13 minutes of the game, the Statesmen heated up, making 6-of-10 in the final seven minutes. Hobart went into the break trailing 31-26.
St. Lawrence made the first basket of the second half to push its lead to seven, but the Statesmen got in the zone, making 14 of their first 18 shots from the floor. The hot start to the second half was keyed by LaValle, who scored all of his points during a 28-6 run that gave Hobart a 54-39 lead with eight minutes to go.
Leading 61-45 with less than seven minutes left, the hot shooting Statesmen cooled off. Hobart missed its next four shots while SLU used a 13-1 run to make it a 4-point game with 51 seconds left. Condlin paced the rally with 6 points. Zachery made a layup with 11 seconds to go to make it a one-possession game, 65-62, but senior
Connor Rehbaum iced the victory with a pair of made free throws with seven seconds left.
The Statesmen will be back in action at Clarkson University (15-3, 8-1) on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 4 p.m.
