GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College first-year
Derrick Acheampong's goal in the 18th minute secured a 1-0 win for the Statesmen soccer team over visiting Vassar College in a Liberty League game played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. It was Hobart's third straight win.
The Statesmen improve to 9-2-2 overall and 2-1-2 in conference play. The Brewers fall to 6-4-2 overall and 2-2-0 in the Liberty League. The win was the eighth shutout of the season for Hobart.
Acheampong's fourth goal of the year came off an assist from junior
Joe Busuttil. Busuttil sent a cross from the right side that Acheampong back heeled into the goal for what proved to be the game winner. The Statesmen out-shot the Brewers' 12-2 in the first half and controlled most of the momentum.
Vassar had a number of scoring chances late in the second half. The Brewers finished with a total of 10 corners, logging six in the second half. In the 70th minute, Vassar earned the first of three straight corners. On the first attempt, Jordan Palmer's shot sailed wide. On the second, Gavin Jennings sent in the corner and a blast by Tanner Sands was stopped by senior Hobart keeper
Tyler Serafine. His vertical leap allowed him to deny the chance, but the rebound bounced to Nick Hess who drilled another shot on goal that was once again punched away by Serafine. The Brewers could not get a shot off on the third corner of the series.
The Statesmen had chances to score an insurance goal, but they couldn't find the back of the net. With just over 13 minutes remaining, senior
Jacob Fox and sophomore
Zach Poretz broke through the Brewers' back line. Poretz dished to Fox from the top of the box, but Fox's shot went just wide of the left post.
Hobart finished with three corners and a 21-9 lead in shots. Serafine made four saves in all 90 minutes in goal to earn his seventh shutout of the year. Sebastien Lasseur played all 90 minutes and stopped 10 shots.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 17, when they host Bard for another Liberty League contest at 2 p.m.
