GENEVA, N.Y. - The sixth-ranked William Smith College field hockey team collected its 13th win of the season today defeating Cortland 3-0 on a blustery day at McCooey Field. Junior
Alessandra Patrizio scored in the game's first minute and the Herons never looked back.
William Smith (13-1 started quickly. Just 54 seconds into the game, Patrizio dribbled around her defender and fired a shot into the back of the net to give the Herons a 1-0 lead. The goal would be the only goal of the first half as the teams played the next 34:06 scoreless. Wood had a golden opportunity to double the Herons lead turned aside in the 11th minute. She shot the ball from the right side but the Red Dragon's goalie, Kailynne Reinoehl, made a sprawling stick save to keep the ball out of the net.
Wood scored twice in the second half to secure the victory for William Smith. In the 49th minute, she collected a rebound and deposited the ball into the cage. Off of a penalty corner, sophomore
Alexandra Frary had a shot blocked by a Cortland defender. Wood collected the loose ball and scored her 21st goal of the season. In the 65th minute, she blasted a shot from the top of the arc that Reinoehl had no chance of stopping. Junior

Maura Moran were credited with assists on the goal.
With two goals today, Wood matched her scoring output from her rookie season, 45 points (22g, 5a). She now has 44 goals for her career and is ninth on the William Smith career goals list one behind Lauren VonBereghy '00.
Cortland's best scoring opportunity came in the 43rd minute. Jillian Vogl broke into the attacking zone and fired a shot that William Smith goalie
Emily King turned aside. The Red Dragons (10-4) were awarded a penalty corner during the sequence but Gabby Stein had her shot blocked by Frary who raced out of the cage to get a stick on the ball.
The Herons had plenty of opportunities to extend their lead late in the second half. They earned eight penalty corners in the game's final ten minutes but only capitalized on Wood's goal.

Lauren Stevenson to keep the Cortland attack bottled up in midfield. William Smith allowed the Red Dragons to take just seven shots.
Sophomore
Emily King made her first career start in goal for the Herons and recorded her first career shutout stopping all three shots she faced. Kailynne Reinoehl started in the cage and played 67:05 for Cortland and stopped nine shots. Mairead Hourihan came on in relief to play the final three minutes of the contest.
William Smith dominated the stat sheet outshooting the Red Dragons 26-7. The Herons also held a 15-5 advantage on penalty corners with 13 of those coming in the second half.
William Smith returns to Liberty League play on Friday, Oct. 23, when they host St. Lawrence on McCooey Field. The game will be the final regular season home game for senior
Madison Finn.
