Ruane scores twice, Herons shut out Mount Saint Mary 2-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College junior Brie Ruane logged two goals as the No. 5 Heron soccer team blanked Mount Saint Mary College 2-0 in a non-league game played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. William Smith has now tallied 12 consecutive shutout victories.

The Herons improve to 13-1-1 overall, while the Blue Knights coached by William Smith almuna BreLynn Nasypany '11 are now 12-6-1 this season.

Heron first-year goalkeeper Kaileen Murray played all 90 minutes in goal and stopped the lone shot she faced to earn her 10th shutout of the season. With her two goals this afternoon, Ruane now leads William Smith with nine goals and 21 points this season.

Despite the Herons having a number of scoring chances and outshooting the Blue Knights 15-1 in the first half, the score was 0-0 at the break. Mount Saint Mary's keeper Mary Riley had a number of outstanding saves to keep William Smith off the scoreboard.  In the 14th minute, senior Krista Longo carried the ball into the box and drilled a shot on goal, but Riley made the vertical leap to deny the chance. In the 43rd minute and following a William Smith corner, junior MacKenzie Smith fired a shot on goal from the top left corner of the box and her chance was also punched away by Riley. Riley finished with six saves in goal for Mount Saint Mary.

The Blue Knights lone shot of the game came in the 21st minute. Melissa Guillemette put a shot on goal from the top of the box, but Murray stepped up and made the save.

Ruane broke through in the 48th minute for what proved to be the game winner. Sophomore Evie Manning played a through ball up the middle, and Ruane was there to connect with a low shot from about 16 yards out. Ruane added an insurance goal in the 79th minute. This time her unassisted tally came from the top of the box.

The Herons finished with a 35-1 advantage in shots and a 12-0 lead in corners.Today also marked the final regular season home game for seniors Zoe Eth, Zoe Jackson Gibson, and Krista Longo.
