Statesmen win 4th straight, down Utica 5-1

The Hobart College hockey team picked up its fourth straight win with a 5-1 victory over Utica in the Pioneers' Memorial Auditorium tonight. The Statesmen are now 4-0-0 in the ECAC West and 4-1-1 overall.

Senior Sean Rudy led Hobart with two goals. Juniors Nick Bingaman and Bobby Sokol each added a goal and an assist. First-year Trevor Poirier chipped in two assists. Senior goaltender Lino Chimienti played all 60 minutes and finished with 26 saves.

The Pioneers fall to 3-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play. Michael Fredrick played 59:52 in goal for Utica and finished with 37 saves.

Bingaman opened the scoring for Hobart with 3:03 left in the first period. His power-play goal came off passes from classmates Connor Simon and Sokol. The Statesmen tacked on another goal in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. Just 1:47 in, Rudy notched his first of the night. First-years Tanner Shaw and Poirier earned the assists.

The Pioneers got on the scoreboard 1:03 into the third period. Kevin Valenti scored Utica's lone goal. Alex Brissette and Hayden Dawes set up the play that got the Pioneers within one. The Statesmen stifled Utica's hopes of a comeback with goals from Rudy, Sokol and sophomore Vincent Russo to close out the game. Rudy's second goal of the night came off a feed from Poirier at 8:10 into the third. The Pioneers pulled Fredrick with 2:10 left in the game for the extra skater, however, eight seconds later, Sokol logged an empty net tally. Russo closed out the scoring with a power-play goal with 54 seconds on the clock. Senior Brad Robbins and Bingaman were credited with the assists.

The Statesmen finished 2-for-7 on the power play and killed all six of the Pioneers' power-play attempts. Hobart held a 42-27 advantage in shots.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 20, when they travel for another ECAC West game at Elmira at 7 p.m.
