#6 Herons roll past Bridgewater 6-0 in NCAA 2nd Round Game

GENEVA, N.Y. – The sixth-ranked William Smith College advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament with a 6-0 victory over Bridgewater on McCooey Field this morning. Junior Alessandra Patrizio and first-year Fallon Adair each scored twice to lead the Herons to the NCAA quarterfinals.

William Smith (18-2) opened the scoring in the 13th minute. Patrizio redirected a shot in front of the cage that beat Bridgewater goalie, Marisa Sims. Sophomore Alexandra Frary dribbled the ball into the attacking arc and fired a shot. Patrizio reached her stick out and deflected the ball into the cage.

A little over two minutes later, Adair notched her first goal of the game to give the Herons a 2-0 lead. Hannah Wood fired a shot past Sims that Adair redirected into the goal.  The goal was Adair's fourth of the year.

Wood notched her 29th goal of the season in the 24th minute. She blasted a shot from the top of the arc off a penalty corner. Cydney Conley and Maura Moran were credited with assists on the goal. Wood is now one goal behind Kimberley O'Gorman for the William Smith single-season record. Two minutes later, Patrizio struck again. She created a turnover in the offensive end of the field and slapped a shot past Sims.  The goal was Patrizio's 23rd of the year.

In the 39th minute, Frary connected for her seventh goal of the season. She collected her own rebound and buried the scoring opportunity. Adair closed out the scoring on a penalty corner in the 46th minute.  Junior Lindsay Brandt fired a shot from the top of the arc that Adair was able to get a stick on and redirect past the Eagles' goalie.
Bridgewater's (13-9) best scoring opportunity game in the 52nd minute when Tessa Tierson steered a shot wide of the cage.

The Herons dominated the box score, outshooting the Eagles 21-5. William Smith earned four penalty corners to Bridgewater's one.

Junior Biz Chirco got the start in goal for William Smith and played 56:14. Sophomore Emily King came on for the final 13:46 and made one stop. In the Eagles net, Hannah Rioux made four saves in 44:14 of action while the starter Sims made two in 25:46.

The William Smith defensive and midfield core did a solid job of shutting down Bridgewater, limiting them to just five shots.

The Herons will be back in action tomorrow when they take on third-ranked Middlebury on McCooey Field. The Panthers advanced to the quarterfinal with a 2-0 win over Franklin & Marshall this afternoon. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
