Longo scores twice, Herons top Penn State Berks 3-0 in NCAA tournament 1st round game

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College senior Krista Longo scored two goals to lead the No. 3 Heron soccer team to a 3-0 win over Penn State Berks in an NCAA tournament first round game played this afternoon on Cozzens Field.

The Herons improve to 17-1-1 overall and advance to the second round where they will face Roger Williams, who topped Misericordia 2-1 in the other first round game played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The second round match will be played on Cozzens Field tomorrow, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m.

Junior Kara Shue notched two assists for the Herons in the win. First-year goalie Veronica Romines got the start in goal and made one save in 86:10. Classmate Kaileen Murray came in for the final 3:50 and did not need to make a save.

The Nittany Lions finish their season with a 16-3-2 record. Paige Elmy played all 90 minutes in goal for Penn State Berks and made 11 saves.

Longo opened the scoring just 2:24 into the match. Shue pushed a short pass ahead to Longo. The Lions' goalie came out to play the ball, and got caught out of place. Longo got behind her and fired into the open net. Longo struck again in the 28th minute. This time she took a pass from junior Brie Ruane and beat her defender at the top of the box. She drilled her shot off the right post and over the goal line. Longo leads the Herons with 13 goals and 29 points this season.

In the 64th minute, junior Lauren Randaccio gave the Herons a 3-0 advantage with her eighth goal of the year. Shue lofted the ball into the box. Randaccio was here to settle it and tap it over the goal line. Shue leads William Smith with 11 assists this season. She is now tied for fifth on the Heron single season list and ranks second on the William Smith career list with 34.

The Lions best scoring chance of the game came with a little over 18 minutes remaining. Lizzie Mummau broke by her Heron defender, but Romines came out of the goal to scoop up the ball before Mummau could get her shot off. Penn State Berks' lone shot on goal came in the 68th minute. Dana Sarcinello fired on goal, but Romies was right there to make the stop.

The Herons finished with a 29-1 advantage in shots and held an 11-0 lead in corners.
