GENEVA, N.Y. – The William Smith College ice hockey team was edged 4-2 by Potsdam at The Cooler this afternoon.
Potsdam (3-2-2, 1-2-1) scored the game's first goal at 10:10 of the first period. Jordan Ott created a turnover in the left corner and wristed a shot on goal. The puck deflected off of William Smith goalie
Maggie Salmon's back and into the net. The goal came on the Bears' first shot of the game. Three minutes later, Jenna Patterson made it 2-0. Allison Greene tapped a pass to Patterson who snapped a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle. After Potsdam's second goal,
Laurel Brown came on in relief for William Smith.
The Herons (2-3-1, 0-3-1) turned the game's momentum in their favor in the second period. Just under three minutes into the period Rachel Grefke was called for tripping. William Smith managed four shots on the power play including two golden scoring opportunities from first-year
Stephanie Hampton. The Herons broke through at 10:25 of the period when sophomore
Krista Federow scored her third goal of the season. The play developed out of the defensive zone where
Rebecca Begley caused a turnover. Begley sent a clearing pass to first-year
Tess Madarasz at center ice. Madarasz found Federow alone behind the Potsdam defense and Federow put a backhanded shot between Abby Tardelli's pads.
At 2:04 of the third period,
Rachael Barry's first collegiate goal tied the game at two. Off of a scrum in front of the cage, Barry was able to tuck the puck across the goal line.
Rachel McKay and
Kiley Fewster were credited with assists on the goal.
Anna-Rose Bertin gave Potsdam a 3-2 lead at 8:54 of the third period. Bertin beat Brown blocker side. Rylie Murray and Kaylen Van Wagner were credited with the assists. Murray added an empty net goal at 18:56.
Salmon, who started in goal for William Smith, played the first 13:15 of the game and made four saves. Brown, making her first collegiate appearance, stopped 20 shots. Abby Tardelli made 23 stops in goal for the Bears.
Both teams came away empty on the power play. William Smith went 0-4, while Potsdam went 0-1 with the extra attacker.
The Herons will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 20 when they travel to Ashton, Pa. for a pair of ECAC West game against Neumann. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
