Colby tops William Smith in Cave Classic Championship Game

BRIDGEWATER, Mass.—Colby College jumped out to a 7-0 lead on William Smith College and never looked back, in the championship game of The Cave Classic hosted by Bridgewater State University. The Mules never trailed and broke open a 12-point game at the half by shooting 49 percent from the floor in the second half.

Classic MVP Carylanne Wolfington scored 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting with four 3-pointers. She was joined on the All-Classic Team by teammate Emily Davis who also scored 14 points, going 7-of-11 from the floor. Haley Driscoll and Mia Diplock added 11 points apiece for Colby.

The Herons (1-2) got a second straight double-double from junior Gabrielle Eure, who notched a team-high 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. She earned a spot on the All-Classic Team following last night's 17-point, 20-rebound performance against the host Bears. First-year Mara Sindoni chipped in seven points while sophomore Kendra Quinn-Moultrie contributed six points and six boards. William Smith had a 41-38 rebounding edge, but shot just 29 percent from the floor, including 2-of-9 from behind the arc.

The Herons committed 26 turnovers in the game, including 10 in the first 10 minutes, falling behind 12-7 after the first quarter.

After the teams traded 3-pointers to start the second quarter, Colby started to pull away, using a 14-6 run to build a 29-16 lead over William Smith. Sophomore Sarah Brophy made a 3-pointer to get the Herons back within 10, but Davis converted a layup to send the Mules into the locker room with a 12-point lead at the half.

Colby got off to a fast start in the third quarter, netting the first 10 points of the stanza, including a pair of 3s by Wolfington.

Eure made the second of two free throws to open the fourth quarter scoring and trim the deficit to 26, but William Smith got no closer.

The Herons will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 24, when they visit Cortland. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
