GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 3 William Smith College soccer team scored in the 86th minute to send its NCAA tournament quarterfinal match to overtime, but ended in a 1-1 double overtime tie with No. 6 Williams. The Ephs advanced to the national semifinals, 3-0 on penalty kicks.

The Herons finished their season with a 19-1-2 overall record. This year's William Smith soccer team finished with program records of 182 points, 65 goals and 52 assists. The Herons' 0.26 goals against average also ranks fifth on the William Smith single season list. Their 19 wins in 2015 rank third in William Smith soccer history, as do the team's 17 shutouts.

The Ephs (19-1-2) got on the scoreboard early. Kristi Kirshe pushed a short pass ahead inside the box to Audrey Thomas. Thomas put her shot from right in front into the back of the net to give Williams a 1-0 advantage just 7:31 in. It was just the sixth goal William Smith has allowed all season.

The Herons had a number of close calls to tie the game up, controlling the momentum of the game and out-shooting the Ephs, 8-3 in the first half and 8-5 in the second. It wasn't until the 86th minute that a header by junior
Shay Callahan tied the game up. It came after a William Smith corner and senior
Zoe Jackson Gibson earned the assist on the game-tying goal. It was Callahan's fourth goal this year.

The Herons logged a 3-1 advantage in shots in the first overtime and a 3-2 edge in the second overtime period. In the final seconds of the first overtime, the Herons earned a corner kick, but the attempt was punched away by the Williams keeper. One of William Smith's best scoring chances came 5:35 into the second overtime. The Herons earned a free kick just outside of the box. Junior
Emma Diehl drilled her shot on goal, but Williams' goalkeeper Tressa Palcheck just got a hand on the ball to make the stop.

Williams had a chance for the game winner in the 108th minute. Kirshe broke through with Audrey Thomas. Thomas dished to Kirshe, but she fired her shot just wide of the left post. Â The Herons finished with a 13-2 advantage in corners. First-year
Veronica Romines played all 110 minutes in goal for William Smith and made five saves. Palcheck played 110 minutes for Williams and made seven saves, but Olivia Barnhill came in to face the penalty kicks for the Ephs.

The Ephs connected on all three of their penalty kicks to advance to the national semifinals, 3-0. Barnhill saved two of the Herons' kicks, while Romines stopped one of Williams' shots.Â

Krista Longo finished her Heron soccer career tied for seventh on the William Smith list for career goals with 37 and tied for ninth with 89 career points. She tied for 13th on the single season list with 14 goals this year and tied for 14th with 33 points this season. Junior
Kara Shue tied for fifth on the Heron list with 11 assists this season, and first-year goalie
Kaileen Murray ranks second on the single season list with a 0.15 goals against average this fall.

This season was the 32nd consecutive winning season for William Smith soccer and the Herons' 26th appearance in the NCAA tournament. In the last four years, the Heron seniors posted a 72-7-7 overall record and an 11-1-3 mark in NCAA tournament play.
