#6 William Smith to host Liberty League semifinals

The sixth-ranked William Smith College field hockey team finished the regular season with a 15-2 overall record and a 5-1 record in Liberty League play. With a 2-1 victory over Skidmore on Oct. 25, the Herons clinched the Liberty League tournament's No. 1 seed and they will have home field advantage throughout.

William Smith will host Vassar at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 4, under the lights of McCooey Field. Vassar is the tournament's No. 4 seed after posting a 12-5 overall record and a 3-3 record in conference play. The Brewers earned the fourth seed in the tournament by virtue of its 1-0 win over Rensselaer. The other semifinal will pit second seeded Rochester (15-4, 4-2) against third seeded Skidmore (13-5, 4-2). The Yellowjackets and Thoroughbreds will play at 7 p.m. in Rochester.

Tomorrow's game will mark the second meeting between the Herons and Vassar this season. The Brewers handed William Smith its only conference loss of the season on Oct. 3. Vassar emerged victorious in Poughkeepsie 3-1. The two teams have met 16 times since 2000 with the Herons holding a 14-2 edge in the series and a 7-0 edge on McCooey Field.

The Herons are led offensively by the dynamic duo of sophomore Hannah Wood and junior Alessandra Patrizio. Wood leads the team with 24 goals and 54 points. Patrizio is second on the team with 20 goals and 44 points. Junior Cydney Conley and sophomore Maura Moran are tied for the team lead with eight assists. Wood is second in the Liberty League and fifth in the nation in goals per game (1.41) and second in the conference and seventh in the nation in points per game (3.18). Patrizio is third in the conference in both categories. The Herons' offensive unit is 12th in the nation in goals per game (3.76), and 13th in points per game (9.82). Senior Madison Finn leads the league with eight defensive saves. Biz Chirco has started 16 games for the Herons recording an 1.86 goals against average and a .702 save percentage. This season William Smith is 11-0 on its home turf and has outscored its opponents 50-16.

Vassar's offensive attack is spread out. Lauren Wiebe leads the team with eight goals, six assists, and 22 points. Six other players have at least three goals. Megan Caveny is second on the team with six goals, five assists, and 17 points. Defensively, Sophie Arnold leads the team with five defensive saves. Paige Amico has played every minute in goal for the Brewers and owns a 1.41 goals against average and a .667 save percentage. The Brewers are 3-5 away from Weinberg Turf Field this season.
