SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—Senior
Connor Rehbaum and sophomore
Thomas Campion combined for 42 points to lead Hobart College to an 85-57 Liberty League men's basketball victory over Union College at the Viniar Athletic Center this afternoon.
The Statesmen shot 52 percent from the floor, making a season-high 17 3-pointers, and had a 43-34 rebounding advantage. Rehbaum was 6-of-8 from deep and logged a game-high 22 points and grabbed six rebounds. Campion made 5-of-7 from behind the arc and notched 20 points. Senior
Andrew Hoy chipped in three triples and 15 points, while junior
Michael LaValle also had three 3s for nine points. First-year
Luke Ruddy recorded eight points and a game-high eight rebounds. Senior
Trey Blanding dished out a game-high four assists.
Â
Union was led by William Hython, who had 18 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Terell Winney's seven points gave him a total of 1,225 career points. He ends his career ranked 13th all-time on Union's career scoring list. Weckworth also had seven points and Deshon Burgess and Wade McNamara had six rebounds each. Union shot 30 percent for the day. Burgess had a game-high four steals for the Dutchmen.
Â
The game was a showdown of the Liberty League's top offense (Union 75.3 ppg) and top defense (Hobart 59.3 papg). The Statesmen defense prevailed for the second time this month. Hobart is the only team to hold the Dutchmen under 60 points and they did it twice, topping Union 67-59 in Bristol Gym on Feb. 3.
Â
In fact, the Statesmen are playing historically good team defense. Hobart, which was 11th in the nation in scoring defense through Wednesday's games, lowered its points allowed average to 59.2 ppg with today's win. To find a Statesmen squad that played tougher defense, you have to turn back the clocks to the 1950-51 season when Spike Garnish was in his first season at the helm of the Hobart program and the Statesmen's 13 foes averaged just 53.8 ppg.
Hobart opened the game on a 10-2 run and led 21-8 by the midpoint of the first half. The Statesmen led by as many as 14 (27-13) with 7:01 left in the first half. Hobart went into the locker room with a 36-25 lead. Rehbaum led all scorers with 15 at the break, while Hoy had 11.
Â
In the second half, Union (10-15, 4-12) was within 16 at 50-34 with 13:16 left in the second half, but the Statesmen went on a 37-17 run over the next 6:55 for a game best 31 point lead. Campion caught fire after intermission, scoring 17 of his 20 points as Hobart ran away from the Dutchmen for its 18th win of the season.
Â
The Statesmen improved to 13-3 in the league and earned the No. 2 seed in the Liberty League Tournament. Overall, Hobart ended the regular season with an 18-7 record. The Statesmen will host Clarkson (19-6, 12-4) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
Â
Hobart and Clarkson split their regular season meetings. The Golden Knights won in Geneva 66-56 on Jan. 9, but the Statesmen avenged the loss in Potsdam 53-48 on Jan. 31.
