GENEVA, N.Y.- The No. 8 Hobart College ice hockey team was defeated by No. 4 Oswego State 6-1 in an NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey first round game at The Cooler this evening. The Statesmen finish the season with a 21-7-0 overall record tying the 2008-09 team for the Hobart record for wins in a season.
The Lakers (19-4-4) opened the scoring at 1:17 of the first period. Mike Montagna collected a rebound and shoveled the puck into the goal. Mitchell Herlilhey fired the initial shot that Hobart goalie
Frank Oplinger was unable to control. Nick Rivait was also credited with an assist. Oplinger stopped the next 10 shots to close out the period.
Oswego doubled its lead 41 seconds into the second period. Matt Galati notched the first of three second period goals for the Lakers. Sean Federow sent a cross cage pass to Galati who tapped the puck across the goal line. A little over three minutes later, Kenny Neil made it 3-0 Lakers. Neil collected his own rebound and sent it into the goal. Neil's goal game on Oswego's lone power play of the night. The Lakers third goal of the period came when Bobby Gertsakis tipped in a loose puck to make it 4-0.
Junior
Brad Robbins got the Statesmen on the board at 11:02 of the second period. Robbins collected a pass from classmate
Ben Gamache at the top of the crease and fired a shot that beat Oswego goalie Matt Zawadzki top shelf. Robbins' goal seemed to swing momentum as Hobart carried the play keeping the puck in the offensive end for the rest of the period.
Carl Belizario had a golden scoring opportunity robbed by the glove of Zawadzki.
The Lakers added two third period goals to increase their lead to 6-1. Galati notched his second of the night at 4:03 of the third period. Shawn Hulshof closed out the scoring at 18:41.
First-year
Jordan Haskell had the Statesmen's best scoring opportunity of the third period. After an Oplinger save, Haskell broke into the Oswego zone and snapped a wrist shot that Zawadzki gloved down at the last second.
Oplinger started between the pipes for Hobart and made 34 saves. Zawadzki started in goal for the Lakers and stopped 33 shots including 15 in the third period.

The Class of 2015 finished their Hobart careers with a 70-31-7 record. The 10 seniors won two ECAC West Conference Championships. Â Senior
Ryan Michel finished his career with 60 assists, ninth on the Hobart list for career assists.Â
