Ithaca comes from behind to top Herons 12-9

GENEVA, N.Y.­­—The Ithaca College women's lacrosse team outscored William Smith 7-2 in the second half to clinch a 12-9 victory in a non-league game played this afternoon on Boswell Field.
 
The Bombers closed out the game on a five goal run, tying things up at 9-9 with 3:09 remaining and scoring the game winner with 2:28 on the clock. Ithaca improves to 5-6 overall, while the Herons fall to 4-7.
 
Sophomore Alexandra Bird notched three goals for William Smith and junior Emy Stratton added two goals and an assist. Junior Geneva Calder scored two goals. First-year Melissa Moore logged a goal, an assist and three draws. Sophomore Jackie Rogers and senior Rachel Hughes each picked up three ground balls. Hughes added a draw and two caused turnovers. Junior goalie Allie O'Hara played all 60 minutes and finished with a career-high seven saves.
 
Morgan Cadwell led the Bombers with four points on three goals and an assist. Natalie Lang added three goals and Niki Standera and Riley Marion scored twice. Marion added three ground balls, a game-high seven draws and three caused turnovers. Delaney Gilson produced a goal and an assist. Kimberly Presuto played the opening 31:14 and made one save. Kelsey Fee came in for the final 28:46 to earn the win. She stopped two shots.
 
Just 44 seconds into the game, Stratton put the Herons on the board. Standera tied things up at 1-1 after a feed from Ally Runyon. Bird posted an unassisted tally, but Runyon scored a goal of her own to make it 2-2. Natalie Lang capitalized on a free position to give Ithaca its first lead of the game at 3-2 with 24:38 on the clock. William Smith rattled off the next three goals to take a 5-3 lead. Calder logged her first of the game after a pass from Stratton followed by unassisted tallies from Moore and Bird. With 14:46 left in the first, Runyon notched her second of the afternoon, but Calder struck again for William Smith to make it 6-4. Caldwell put the Bombers within one with 6:42 left before the break, but O'Hara stopped four straight shots by the Bombers and first-year Alexandria Burns found the back of the net after a pass from Moore with 23 seconds remaining to give the Herons a 7-5 advantage at halftime.
 
Bird posted her 29th goal of the season 23 seconds into the second half. Marion and Gilson both logged free position goals to get the Bombers within one with 24:17 remaining. With 19:30 on the clock, Stratton gave the Herons a 9-7 lead, but Ithaca took over the momentum scoring the final five goals of the game to clinch the win. Marion started the run with 13:53 left. Standera scored the game-tying goal at 3:09 and Runyon put Ithaca on top with a free position goal with 2:28 remaining. Lang added score twice in the final minute.
 
The Bombers finished with a 27-17 lead in shots, a 20-16 edge in ground balls and a 14-8 advantage in draws. Ithaca was successful on 12-of-15 clear attempts. The Herons were successful on 17-of-26 tries.
 
William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, April 11, when it travels to take on Union in a Liberty League game at 2 p.m.
