Game Recap: William Smith Field Hockey | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

#13 Herons cruise past Red Dragons 5-1

For the fourth time in as many games this season, the 13th-ranked William Smith field hockey team produced five goals as they defeated Oneonta 5-1 on a rainy day at McCooey Field.

The Herons (4-0) took the lead at 10:20 of the first half when sophomore Maura Moran scored her second goal of the season. The Red Dragons (2-3) were assessed a penalty that gave Moran a penalty stroke. She lifted a shot over the right blocker of the Oneonta goalie to give William Smith the 1-0 lead. Both of Moran's goals this season have come off of strokes.

The Herons extended their lead at 27:53 of the first half. Sophomore Alexandra Frary potted her third goal of the year. Frary picked up a loose ball in front of the cage and fired a shot past the Red Dragon goalie. William Smith held a two goal lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Herons really kicked their offense into gear, scoring three goals. Junior Alessandra Patrizio notched her team leading eighth goal of the year to put William Smith up 3-0. Sophomore Hannah Wood fired a shot from outside of the 16-yard arc the ricocheted off the right post to Patrizio's stick.  Patrizio slammed home the rebound.

Oneonta momentarily stymied the Heron momentum when they scored twenty seconds later to make it 3-1. Allyson Wells picked up a bouncing ball and slid a shot past the Heron goalie.

William Smith added to their lead at the 57 minute mark of the game. Wood carried the ball into the arc and with her back to the cage blasted a shot into the goal.  Wood's sixth goal of the season was assisted by first-year Fallon Adair.

Patrizio notched her second of the game and ninth of the season at 24:18 of the second half. Wood fired a shot that Red Dragon's goalie, Krista Serevido, turned aside Patrizio collected the rebound and shot the ball into the goal.

The Herons used a strong defensive effort to limit Oneonta to just 5 shots. Senior Madison Finn held the Red Dragon's top goal scorer, Hannah Hayward, to just two shots.

Junior Biz Chirco got the start in goal and turned aside the only shot she faced in the first half.  Sophomore Emily King came in and played the second half. Serevido played all 70 minutes for the Red Dragons and made 12 saves.

William Smith outshot Oneonta 29-5 and held a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners.

The Herons will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 15, when they host Nazareth at McCooey Field. The matchup with the Golden Flyers is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
