#8 Herons blank Valiants 3-0 to open William Smith Classic

GENEVA, N.Y. – The eighth-ranked William Smith field hockey team posted its second-straight shutout defeating Manhattanville 3-0 on McCooey Field this afternoon. Sophomore Hannah Wood scored two goals to record a game-high four points.

Wood opened the scoring for the Herons at 2:20 of the first half. Maura Moran inserted a penalty corner to the top of the 16-yard arc. Junior Cydney Conley stopped the ball, allowing Wood to blast her eighth goal of the season past the Manhattanville goalie.

Five minutes later, junior Alessandra Patrizio made it 2-0 William Smith. Patrizio picked up a loose ball on the right side of the cage. She deked around the sprawling goalie and fired a shot into the goal.

Wood scored her second goal of the game at 18:11 of the first half. Wood collected a rebound and pocketed her ninth goal of the season.

Wood's first goal at 2:02 of the first half would be all the Herons would need as junior Biz Chirco posted a three-save shutout. The Valiants had two golden opportunites on penalty corners turned aside by William Smith defensive saves. At 15:23 Jessica Borbee stopped a Bregje Smits' shot to keep the Herons in front 2-0.  Late in the second half, Madison Finn recorded a key defensive save stopping a Morgan Parsons' point blank shot.

William Smith owned an 18-9 advantage in shots and earned an 11-6 edge in penalty corners.

Chirco got her sixth straight start and improved to 6-0. Megan Hughes made eight stops in goal for Manhattanville.

The Herons will be back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they host Lebanon Valley in the final game of the William Smith Classic. The Valiants will play St. Lawrence tomorrow at 11 a.m.
