#5 Herons blank Union 1-0 in Liberty League opener

GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 5 William Smith College soccer team topped Union 1-0 in its Liberty League opener. Junior Kara Shue scored the lone goal of the game for the Herons in the 60th minute.

William Smith improves to 5-1-1 overall, while the Dutchwomen fall to 2-3-3 this season and 0-2-0 in conference play. The Herons controlled the momentum of the entire game, outshooting Union 27-3 overall and limiting the Dutchwomen to just one shot on goal. It was William Smith's fifth shutout of the season and fourth in a row.

In the 60th minute, sophomore Katherine Campbell placed a long pass perfectly up the right side of the field to find Shue. Shue collected the ball, beat her defender and fired her shot into the back of the net to put William Smith on top 1-0. Shue's second goal of the season proved to be the only one the Herons would need to secure the victory.

Union's best scoring chance of the game came on their lone corner in the 64th minute. Keriann Mackey placed the corner into the box, but it bounced to the top of the box and was immediately cleared out by the Herons.

Junior Lauren Randaccio came inches away from putting William Smith on the scoreboard in the first half. In the 27th minute, junior Emma Diehl sent a corner kick into the box for the Herons. Randaccio was there redirect it with a header at the goal, but it banged off the crossbar. The rebound bounced back to Randaccio, who again sent a header on goal, but Union goalkeeper Erica Matteo came up with the save.

The Herons finished with a 10-1 advantage in corners. William Smith first-year goalkeeper Kaileen Murray stopped the only shot she faced to earn the shutout. Matteo finished with 10 saves in all 90 minutes in goal for the Dutchwomen.

The Herons will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 2, when they host Rensselaer for another Liberty League game at 4 p.m.
