Game Recap: William Smith Field Hockey | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

Patrizio lifts #18 Herons to 5-4 upset of #7 Bears in OT

GENEVA, N.Y. – The 18th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team knocked off seventh-ranked Ursinus 5-4 in overtime in a back and forth game on McCooey Field today. Junior Alessandra Patrizio scored 3:14 into the first overtime session to net the upset for the Herons.

In the extra frame, William Smith (2-0) capitalized on their only scoring opportunity. Sophomore Hannah Wood dribbled the ball down the right side of the field, deked around her opponent and drew the Bears' goalie out of the cage. Wood then centered the pass to Patrizio, who was waiting to bury the shot into the open cage.

William Smith got off to a fast start, notching goals on their first two shots of the game. Sophomore Alexandra Frary picked up a loose ball at the top of the arc and fired a shot that deflected off of the stick of Ursinus' goalie, Danielle DeSpirito, into the back of the net.

Wood collected her first goal of the game and third of the season at 16:46 of the first half. Running down the right side of the field, she cut around her defender and sent a low laser shot past DeSpirito into the goal.

The Bears (1-1) bounced back scoring the game's next four goals. At the 21:00 mark Danielle Stong cut the Heron lead in half when she potted a goal off a scramble in front of the cage. Megan Keenan was credited with an assist on the play. Six minutes later, Keenan added a goal of her own to level things at two, heading into the break. Stong inserted a penalty corner to Kelsey Reed who stopped the ball at the top of the ark where Keenan fired a shot that beat Heron goalie, Biz Chirco, blocker side.

Ursinus picked things up right where they left off after halftime and scored at 4:55 of the second half. Keenan fired a shot from outside the ark that Devin Brakel redirected into the upper half of the cage to make it 3-2. Less than two minutes later, Stong added her second of the game from just inside left post.

After Head Coach Sally Scatton called a time out, William Smith got its momentum back and cut the deficit in half.  Patrizio netted her first goal of the game at 9:52 of the second half.  Fellow junior Jessica Borbee sent in a long hit from the right sideline that Patrizio got her stick on as she was falling down inside the 16-yard arc to beat the Bears goalie.

With just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Wood did what she does best. She deked around a defender and blasted a shot from a tough angle that tucked inside the left post to level the game at 4-4, forcing the extra session.

Chirco got her second straight start between the pipes for the Herons and made 12 saves to improve to 2-0 on the season. DeSpirito started for Ursinus and made 1 stop.

The Bears pushed the offense for a majority of the game, owning a 23-10 advantage in shots and a 14-3 advantage in penalty corners.

William Smith looks to extend their winning streak to three games on Wednesday, Sept. 9, when Geneseo comes to McCooey Field. The game is slated to start at 7 p.m.
