Game Recap: William Smith Ice Hockey | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

#1 Plattsburgh skates away from Herons

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The William Smith College ice hockey team dropped an ECAC West contest to the two-time defending national champion Plattsburgh at the Ronald B Stafford Ice Arena this afternoon. Seven different players scored for the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh (15-0-0, 9-0-0) struck early and often in the first period as they deposited six shots into the back of the net in the first 20 minutes. Courtney Moriarty scored 26 seconds into the first period and the Cardinals did not look back. Jordan Lipson and Melissa Ames each scored twice in the period for Plattsburgh.

Despite being outshot, William Smith (4-9-2, 1-7-2) won the second period.  The Herons scored the middle stanza's lone goal when first-year Stephanie Hampton netted her third goal of the year. Sophomores Krista Federow and Rebecca Begley were credited with assists on Hampton's goal.

The Cardinals tacked on three goals in the final period to push the game to 9-1. Sophomore's Catherine Linehan and Kiley Fewster had scoring opportunities in the middle portion of the period but could not lift their shots over the pads of Kassi Abbott.

Sophomore Emily Spencer got the start for William Smith and made 12 saves in 16:09 of action. Laurel Brown came on in relief and stopped 33 shots, including 17 in the middle period where the Herons were able to keep Plattsburgh off of the scoreboard. Abbott made eight stops in 60 minutes of action for the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh was 2 of 4 on the power play while William Smith came away empty on its three chances.

The Herons will be back in action next weekend, Jan. 23-24, when they host Buffalo State at the Cooler.
