GENEVA, N.Y.—First-years
Colin Dougherty and
Jamal Lucas combined for 45 points to lead Hobart College to a 76-67 Liberty League men's basketball win over Bard College in Bristol Gym tonight. The Statesmen improved to 6-7 overall, 3-3 in the league, while the Raptors slip to 6-10, 3-4 in conference play.
Â
Dougherty logged a game and season-high 24 points, including 15 in the second half. Lucas scored 12 points before halftime and finished with 21 points. Dougherty and Lucas also led Hobart to a 35-29 rebounding advantage with six boards apiece.
Â
Hobart shot 46 percent from the floor, including 52 percent in the second half. The Statesmen made eight 3-pointers and went 18-of-24 at the free throw line.
Â
Bard sophomore DeVahnte Mosley was 6-of-9 from the floor and 8-of-10 at the free throw line on his way to a team-high 20 points. He also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and handed out a game-high five assists. Junior Pat Kelly added 14 points for the visitors, including 11 before halftime.
Â
The Raptors shot 43 percent from the floor, but just 39 percent in the second half. They were 7-of-22 from long range and 18-of-26 from the line.
Â
Bard led by as many as 11 in the first half, but couldn't hold off the Statesmen who took a 37-36 lead into halftime. Hobart, which shot a season-low 28 percent on Tuesday against RIT, continued to struggle early, falling behind 15-4. The Statesmen slowly worked their way out of their funk and closed the half on an 11-3 run, taking their first lead of the contest on a Dougherty jumper in the final minute.
Â
Early in the second half, the Raptors briefly reclaimed the lead at 43-41, but Hobart responded to the threat with six straight points, part of a larger 15-2 run. The Statesmen were able to maintain a two-three possession lead form most of the second half, but junior Harry Johnson's 3-pointer with three minutes to go cut the Hobart lead to 65-62.
Â
At the other end of the floor, Hobart ran an inbounds play with junior
Pete Drescher finding Dougherty all alone in the corner. The latter hoisted up a 3-pointer that hit nothing but net and put the Statesmen ahead by 6.
Â
As the clock approached one minute, Drescher came up with his fifth and final steal of the night. With just single digits showing on the shot clock, first-year
Matt Walsh took a 3 that was off the mark, but Lucas corralled the carom, extending the Hobart possession. His layup 11 seconds later gave the Statesmen an insurmountable 8-point lead.
Â
Hobart will conclude its three-game homestand on Saturday, Jan. 23 when the Statesmen host Vassar at 4 p.m. Bard travels to RIT tomorrow for a 4 p.m. tip off.
