Thoroughbreds top Statesmen 71-54

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Skidmore College put four players in double figures on the way to a 71-54 Liberty League men's basketball win over Hobart College this afternoon. Edvinas Rupkus led the Thoroughbreds with a game-high 21 points.

Rupkus was 8-of-15 from the floor with three 3-pointers. Erik Sanders added 19 points, including five 3-pointers, and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Isaac Carp and Royce Paris chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Statesmen got a team-high 9 points from both junior Pete Drescher and first-year Colin Dougherty. Dougherty also logged a game-high four steals. First-year Jamal Lucas grabbed a game-high seven rebounds to go with 5 points.

First-year Justas Valciukas (6 pts, 4 rebs) made a 3-pointer to put Hobart up 10-7 five minutes into the game, but Sanders responded with back-to-back triples to put Skidmore back in front for good. A few minutes later, the home team scored 8 straight points to take it largest lead of the first half, 26-15, and went into the half with a 37-24 lead.

The Thoroughbreds (6-4, 1-1) opened the second half on an 18-8 run that put them firmly in control of the contest. Sanders, who had a game-high 12 points all from beyond the arc in the first half, stayed hot, scoring 5 points. Rupkus also had 5 points in the opening surge.

Hobart closed the game on a 16-5 run, including a pair of 3-pointers from first-year Harrison DeMaira, but it was too little too late.

The Statesmen were 10-of-23 from beyond the 3-point arc, but struggled overall, shooting just 35.4 percent, and made 10-of-17 at the line. The Thoroughbreds shot 43.4 percent from the floor, including 11-of-28 from deep, and made 14-of-21 from the stripe. Skidmore had a 38-31 rebounding advantage, just the third team to outrebound Hobart this season.
