GENEVA, N.Y.—Sophomore
Kendra Quinn-Moultrie scored a career-high 19 points and a game-high four steals to lead the William Smith College basketball team to a 61-58 Liberty League win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Bristol Gym this afternoon.
Quinn-Moultrie was 6-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc, and 5-of-6 at the free throw line. Three of her four steals came near midcourt that she converted into fast-break layups. Junior
Gabrielle Eure added her eighth double-double of the season on 12 points, a game-high 10 rebounds, and two blocked shots. First-year
Mia Morrison chipped in 11 points, nine boards, and three blocked shots. Junior
Melanie Patterson had 9 points and a team-high four assists.
Sam Krumbhaar was the only Engineer to reach double figures in the scoring column, finishing the contest with 14 points.
Neither team led by more than six points in the first half. Kate Goodell gave the Engineers the largest lead of the first quarter on a layup near the one-minute mark. The Herons countered with a 3-pointer by first-year
Olivia Hughes, to make it a 15-12 game heading into the second quarter.
William Smith had the biggest lead of the second quarter with three 4-point leads. Eure made a layup with two minutes to go in the half for a 28-24 lead, but Ellen Boucher made the final basket of the second quarter to trim the Heron lead to 28-26.
William Smith got a triple from Quinn-Moultrie and a layup from Morrison to start the third quarter and build the largest lead of the game for either side, 33-26. Rensselaer scored the next 7 points, capped off by a traditional 3-point play from Bailei Tetrault. The Herons reclaimed the lead on consecutive layups by Eure and Morrison and maintained a one or two possession lead for the remainder of the third quarter.
RPI briefly took the lead early in the fourth quarter, but after Tetrault's layup gave the visitors a 47-45 lead, the Herons went on an 8-1 run to retake the lead for good. William Smith entered the final minute of play, clinging to a 1-point lead, but over an 18-second span, the Engineers missed three shots that would have given them the lead, including a missed layup after stealing a Heron inbounds pass with 11 seconds to go. Shaina Iton grabbed the rebound underneath, but before she could go back up with it, Patterson grabbed the ball and forced a jump ball. Possession stayed with RPI, but their next shot was short of the rim. Quinn-Moultrie grabbed the rebounds and was fouled. She made both of her shots to give William Smith a 3-point cushion with 1.7 seconds remaining. The Engineers called timeout and advanced the ball to the frontcourt. They were able to get off a 3-point try from the corner, but it hit the side of the backboard as time expired.
All nine Herons that played in the game grabbed at least one rebound, helping the home team to a 45-29 advantage on the glass. William Smith shot 39 percent from the floor, 33 percent from behind the arc, and 69 percent from the free throw line.
RPI shot 38 percent from the field, 39 percent from deep, and just 38 percent at the charity stripe (3-8).
The Herons travel to Vassar on Friday, Feb. 5, for their next contest. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. The Engineers will visit Clarkson at the same date and time.
