Game Recap: William Smith Field Hockey | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

#12 Herons top Brewers 3-2

GENEVA, N.Y.- The 12th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team used two first half goals to secure a 3-2 victory over Vassar in Liberty League play this afternoon. Junior Hannah Wood recorded a game-high four points on two goals.

The Herons (7-3, 2-0) opened the scoring just before the nine minute mark when Wood pocketed her first goal of the game. She collected a pass from classmate Maura Moran right in front of the cage, spun her defender around, and blasted a shot past Vassar goalie, Paige Aimico. With the assist, Moran matches her career-high of 22 points set a year ago and extends her point streak to six games. Wood had a chance to double the lead in the 16th minute. She broke in on Amico one-on-one but Amico made diving stop to keep the ball out of the cage.

Wood notched her second goal of the game and team-best 14th of the season off a penalty corner in the 29th minute. She blasted a shot from the top of the 16-yard arc that Amico had no chance of stopping. Senior Cydney Conley and sophomore Fallon Adair were credited with assists on the goal as the stopper and inserter respectively on the penalty corner. The goal was Wood's sixth-straight against the Brewers dating back to last season and moved her into sole possession of second place on the William Smith career list with 145 points.

Vassar (9-2, 1-1) drew within a goal when Storm Sideleau recorded her fourth goal of the season. She collected a loose ball in front of the cage and fired a backhand on cage. William Smith goalie Biz Chirco got a piece of the shot but could not slow the ball's momentum as it trickled over the line with nine seconds left in the half.

At the end of 35 minutes, William Smith held a 9-5 edge in shots and 4-2 edge in penalty corners.

The Herons wasted little time adding an insurance goal in the second half. Conley scored her first goal of the season to make it 3-1. She collected a rebound and chipped the shot past Amico.

In the 44th minute, the Brewers had a golden scoring opportunity as Cristina Lopez was able to beat Chirco, but senior Jessica Borbee was there to swipe the shot off the line for her first of two defensive saves in the half. Borbee's second defensive save came off the stick of Mikayla Young, also on a penalty corner.

Chirco stood tall down the stretch making four of her five stops in the second half as Vassar ramped up the offensive zone pressure.

The Brewers made it 3-2 with less than 90 seconds left in the game when Alyssa More scored her sixth goal of the season. Megan Caveny was credited with an assist on the goal.

Perhaps Chirco's biggest save of the game came in the final thirty second after Vassar earned a penalty corner. Caveny fired the ensuing shot from the top of the 16-yard arc but Chirco was there to bat the ball out of the air with her blocker.

Amico, who entered the game with the nation's best goals against average and save percentage, made 8 stops in 70 minutes of action.

The teams finished the game with 17 shots each. Thanks to 10 second half penalty corners, the Brewers finished with a 12-6 edge in the game.

William Smith will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 4, when it hosts Oswego under the lights on McCooey Field. The non-conference game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
