#13 Rochester tops #15 William Smith 3-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y.- The 15th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team fell to 13th-ranked Rochester 3-0 in a Liberty League contest at Fauver Stadium this evening. Sayaka Abe led the way for the Yellowjackets with three assists.
 
After a scoreless opening 30 minutes, Rochester (11-2, 2-1) broke the tie at 30:44 when Maya Haigis converted off a penalty corner. She fired a shot from the top of the arc that beat William Smith goalie Biz Chirco. Abe and Olivia Denny were credited with assists on the goal.
 
In the 55th minute Haigis doubled the Yellowjackets lead, firing home a shot from the left side of the arc. Abe was credited with the assist on the goal. Nine minutes later Callie Fisher closed the scoring, burying a shot from the left side of the 16-yard arc. Abe and Denny notched assists on Fisher's ninth goal of the season.
 
William Smith's (9-4, 2-1) best scoring opportunity of the game came in the seventh minute when senior Alessandra Patrizio fired a shot that just missed the left post.
 
In goal, Chirco got the start and made four saves in 70 minutes. On the opposite end of the field, Gabrielle Cantley and Kiran Sundaram each played 35 minutes.
 
The Yellowjackets dominated the stat sheet, outshooting William Smith 10-2. Rochester also earned a 5-3 edge in penalty corners.
 
The Herons will be back on McCooey Field on Friday afternoon when they host Union. The Liberty League contest is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. The 2000 national championship team will be honored at halftime as the ninth William Smith Team of Distinction.
