#1 Herons polish off perfect regular season

GENEVA, N.Y.—The top-ranked William Smith College soccer team closed out the regular season with a 2-0 Liberty League victory over visiting Rochester Institute of Technology on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Herons improved to 16-0-0 and 8-0-0 in the Liberty League while the Tigers end the year with a 7-9-1 mark, 3-5-0 in conference play.

William Smith put RIT under pressure from the start. The Tigers' goalie, Kelly Rogers, made the first of her 10 saves in the sixth minute. Senior Kara Shue rang one off the crossbar in the 19th minute and about a minute later, junior Evie Manning's shot forced Rogers to make another stop. Shue had another shot on target in the 23rd minute, but again Rogers was up to the task.

The Herons finally broke through in the 25th minute when senior Brie Ruane's long ball sprung sophomore Kristina Camaj on a breakaway. She lined up a shot from just outside the box that soared over Rogers' left shoulder and hit the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

William Smith led 1-0 at the half and enjoyed a 9-0 advantage in shots.

RIT got its first shot of the match off the second half's opening whistle. Anka Parzych got behind the William Smtih defense for a one-on-one with Heron keeper Veronica Romines. She came charging off her line and took away the angle, smothering Parzych's shot near the top of the box.

The Herons padded their lead in the 72nd minute when junior Thersa Lohr served one into the box that sophomore Megan Richard used her headed to flick on into the net for her sixth goal of the season.

William Smith finished the game with a 19-2 advantage in shots and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks. Romines recorded her seventh shutout of the season with a pair of saves.

The Herons enter the Liberty League Tournament as the No. 1 seed. They will host Union (8-5-4, 3-2-3) at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
