Shue breaks career assists record in 1-0 win

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College senior Kara Shue earned her 41st career assist as the Heron soccer team defeated Geneseo 1-0 in a non-league game played on Boswell Field tonight. Shue now holds the William Smith career record for assists, surpassing the previous record set by Antoinette DeLucia '00.

The Herons (11-0-0) extend their season-opening win streak to 11 games, and have now earned shutouts in seven of their last eight matches. It was just the second loss of the season for the Knights (4-2-4).

With seven minutes left in the game, Shue set up junior Evie Manning to secure the win for William Smith. Shue pushed a pass from the left side to find Manning out it front. Manning was able to drill her shot into the back of the net for her sixth goal this season. Shue has notched a team-high seven assists. She now ranks sixth on the Heron list with 101 career points.

Sophomore Phoebe Wade came very close to putting William Smith on the scoreboard with 28:36 left in the first half. She blasted a shot on goal, but the Geneseo keeper, Emily Janiszewski made the vertical leap and punched the ball just over the crossbar.

With just over 22 minutes left in regulation, the Knights earned back-to-back corners. On their first attempt, the ball came to Leah Greene, but her shot was blocked by a Heron defender. On the next corner, Domenica Piccoli sent her shot wide of the net.

The Herons finished with a 16-6 advantage in shots, and a 9-3 lead in corners. Janiszewski finished with six saves in goal for Geneseo. Sophomore Veronica Romines earned the shutout in goal for William Smith stopping the two shots she faced. It's her fourth shutout this year.

William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 8, when it travels to Clarkson for a Liberty League game at 3 p.m.
