ITHACA, N.Y.—Ithaca College never trailed in an 84-73 win over William Smith College on Day 2 of the Cortaca Basketball Classic. The Bombers improved to 2-0, while the Herons slip to 1-2.
William Smith had a 43-41 edge on the glass, but Ithaca was plus-nine in turnover margin (21-12) and had a 26-11 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Bombers' Ali Ricchiuti led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting. Teammate Jordan Beers made four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points. Erin Ferguson and Allie Tunick contributed 14 and 13 points, respectively. Ithaca blocked six William Smith shots in the game, including two each by Julie Yacovoni and Annie Giannone.
The Herons were led by senior guard
Melanie Patterson's 18 points. She was 7-of-14 shooting with a pair of 3 pointers and a perfect 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Sophomore forward
Mia Morrison added 17 points on 8-of-15 shooting and sophomore guard
Natalia Baum netted 16 points, going 6-of-12 from the floor, 1-for-1 from deep, and 3-of-4 at the line. Senior forward
Gabrielle Eure had a game-high 11 rebounds.
Beers opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Bombers a lead they never relinquished. Tunick made consecutive triples late in the opening quarter to put Ithaca ahead by 10 before carrying a 21-15 lead into the second quarter.
William Smith used a 10-2 run early in the second quarter to trim its deficit to five at 30-25, but the Bombers responded with a 16-6 run that carried them into halftime with a 46-31 lead.
Ithaca maintained a double digit lead throughout the second half, leading by as many as 18.
William Smith shot 48 percent from the floor, but was just 3-of-11 from 3-point range and 8-of-15 at the free throw line. The Bombers shot 41 percent from the floor and made 10-of-30 3-pointers and 8-of-11 free throws.
The Herons will make their Bristol Gym debut on Tuesday, Nov. 22, when they host Nazareth. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
