Statesmen tie Skidmore 1-1, Thoroughbreds advance on PKs

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team battled Skidmore College to a 1-1 double overtime tie in a Liberty League Tournament semifinal game played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Thoroughbreds advanced to the Liberty League Tournament championship 5-4 on penalty kicks.

The Statesmen, the top seed in the tournament, finish the season with a 9-5-4 overall record. Skidmore, the No. 4 seed, will take on No. 2 Vassar in the championship game. The Brewers topped No. 3 seed RPI 3-1 in the other tournament semifinal. Skidmore is now 7-6-4 overall.

The Thoroughbreds jumped out to a 1-0 lead 16:50 into the match. Skidmore had a thrown-in deep in their offensive end. The Statesmen defense tried to clear the ball, but it bounced right to Kevin Santos who drilled his shot from the top left corner of the box into the far right corner of the goal.

The Statesmen had one of their best scoring chances of the game with 16:31 to go in the first. Junior Joseph Escamilla put a slow, rolling shot on goal that was cleared off the line by Skidmore's Jeremy Tenenbaum.

Escamilla did tie the game up at 1-1 in the 56th minute. He placed his shot just inside the left post. It was Escamilla's second goal this season. Neither team was able to net the game winner in regulation. The Statesmen finished with an 11-3 advantage in shots and a 9-1 lead in corners in the second half.

Hobart logged two shots in the first overtime period, but both went wide of the goal. The Thoroughbreds recorded two shots in the second overtime, one was blocked by the Hobart defense and the second was saved by sophomore goalie Alec Kaminer.

The Statesmen started off penalty kicks, missing their first attempt. Skidmore made their first try, and Hobart senior JP White found the back of the net on its second attempt. The Thoroughbreds missed their second chance wide, and the Statesmen took a 2-1 lead with junior Adrian Colmenares connecting on their third kick. Skidmore's next try was saved by Kaminer, and sophomore Binjo Emmanuel found the back of the net to make it 3-1 Hobart. Santos drilled his shot into the back of the net to make it 3-2, and then the Statesmen hit the post. Bryan Longeran found the back of the net to tie it up at 3-3 for Skidmore, and junior Nick Dosky sent home his shot to give Hobart a 4-3 edge. Skidmore's Tim Spenser made his attempt to make it 4-4, and Hobart's next shot was saved by Skidmore goalie Derrick Yam. Austin Okoye secured a spot for the Thoroughbreds in the championship match making the final attempt.

The last time Hobart soccer went to PKs was in the Liberty League tournament semifinals in 2008. Union advanced to the championship 5-4 on penalty kicks that year.

Hobart finished with a 23-11 advantage in shots and a 14-2 lead in corners in the match. Kaminer played all 110 minutes and made three saves for the Statesmen. Yam finished with 10 saves in all 110 minutes. Hobart posted a 6-0-4 record in overtime games this season. The NCAA Division III record for overtime games in a season stands at 11.

Hobart's five seniors, Joe Busuttil, TJ Kaszubski, JP White, Clint Dunn and Carl Weiss, have helped the Statesmen to a 45-21-10 four-year overall record, an 18-8-6 mark in the Liberty League, and three Liberty League tournament appearances.
